Your grinder used to spin. Now it grinds, sticks, grinds, stops. The teeth are caked, the threads are sticky and the lid won't come off without a fight. Not a broken grinder: a dirty one. After Dark Cannabis lays out how to clean a weed grinder, step by step, from the Jane Street counter. Adults 19+. No product picks. No claims about flower.
Why grinders get sticky
Flower has a sticky surface. Every time you grind, some of it stays on the teeth, the walls and the threads. Over time that film hardens. The teeth stop cutting cleanly and start crushing. The threads stop turning.
Step 0: Collect the kief first
If your grinder has a bottom chamber with a screen, there's usually fine powder collected there. Before cleaning, scrape it out with the small scraper or a clean card and set it aside. Then you won't wash it away.
What you need
- Isopropyl alcohol
- A small container or zip-top bag
- A soft toothbrush you'll never use for teeth again
- Toothpicks or a wooden skewer
- Paper towels
- Warm water
Step 1: Take it apart
Separate every piece: lid, teeth chamber, collection chamber, screen, bottom. Not every grinder has all of them.
Step 2: Freeze it (optional)
Place the pieces in the freezer for a short while. Cold makes the residue brittle so you can knock some loose with a toothpick before the wet clean. This step is optional, but it makes the next one easier.
Step 3: Dry scrub
Use the toothbrush to brush between the teeth and along the threads. Use a toothpick for the corners. Brush gently over the screen. You're removing loose material before you soak.
Step 4: Soak in alcohol
Put metal pieces in a container or zip-top bag and cover them with isopropyl alcohol. Let them soak. The sticky film dissolves. Then brush again.
Important: check the material. Metal grinders tolerate alcohol well. Acrylic or plastic grinders can cloud or crack in alcohol. Clean plastic with warm water and a drop of dish soap instead. Wooden grinders shouldn't be soaked at all.
Step 5: Scrub the screen gently
The screen is the most delicate part. Brush it gently, don't poke at it with a toothpick, and don't bend it.
Step 6: Rinse well
Rinse every part in warm water until there's no alcohol smell left. Alcohol is flammable, so this step matters.
Step 7: Dry completely
Lay the pieces on paper towels and let them air-dry fully. Moisture left in the threads can cause rust on some metals and makes ground flower clump.
Step 8: Reassemble
Put it back together and turn it a few times empty. It should spin smoothly.
How often to clean a weed grinder
- Brush it out every few uses.
- Full clean when it starts sticking or the teeth look caked.
Regular brushing means fewer deep cleans.
Mistakes to avoid
- Soaking plastic in alcohol. Can damage it.
- Bending the screen. Hard to fix.
- Reassembling wet. Clumping and rust.
- Using metal picks on the teeth. Can scratch or chip coatings.
- Washing away the kief. Collect it first.
Two-piece vs four-piece: what changes
A two-piece grinder is just a lid and a teeth chamber, so cleaning is quick. A four-piece adds a collection chamber and a screen, which means more parts and a delicate screen to handle. The steps above cover both; simply skip the parts your grinder doesn't have.
Stuck lid?
If the lid won't turn, a short time in the freezer can loosen it. Then turn firmly. Don't use pliers.
Quick answers
How to clean a weed grinder without alcohol? Warm water, dish soap and a toothbrush work for light build-up.
Can it go in the dishwasher? Generally no. Heat and detergent can damage grinders and screens.
What's the kief chamber for? It collects fine particles that fall through the screen.
